Purchasing a new printer

Purchasing a new printer

When purchasing a new printer, the most important question you can ask yourself is, “What will I use this printer for?”. Will you be printing large volumes of text? Do you want to produce high quality photographs? Do you need something fast and versatile for a small office?

The most important distinction between printer types the consumer must understand is between inkjet and laser printers.

Inkjet printers are the most common types of printer found in the home. Inkjet printers work by spraying tiny droplets of liquid ink onto paper. Many new inkjet printers are inexpensive and versatile, excel at producing high quality photographs, and also do well printing text. While many inkjet printers are very inexpensive, the cost of ink compared to laser printers is more, and heavy printing over time can be quite costly.

Laser printers excel at producing large volumes of crisp text, which makes them ideal for an office environment. You can also find reasonably priced color laser printers that are great for printing color charts and graphs, and also do a reasonable job with photographs.

Both inkjet and laser printers can be found fully featured with scanners, copiers, and fax machines, making them ideal for a home or small office environment.

Below, we’ll highlight some key factors to consider in a printer purchase. Inkfarm.com specializes in selling remanufactured and compatible ink and toner. People interested in aftermarket ink and toner are usually looking for a bargain, so our printer recommendations will take this factor into account. The main points we’ll consider for a recommendation are:

1) The cost of use (i.e. the cost of cartridges).
2) The cost of the printer.
3) Usability and quality of design.

Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers are the most common type of printer used in the home. There are a number of cheap inkjet printers on the market now that include a scanner, copier, fax, and can also produce high quality photographs.

Most of our inkjet printer recommendations will be for either HP or Canon printers. This is because some of the other major manufacturers, such as Epson and Lexmark, take aggressive steps to prevent consumers from using remanufactured and compatible cartridges in their machines. This doesn’t mean that the machines they produce are of poor quality. On the contrary, both of these manufacturers make good printers, but if you are interested in using cheap reliable ink for printing, HP and Canon are better options.

HP Photosmart A536 Compact Photo Printer - $80-$110

If you’re looking for something just to produce photographs, this is a great deal. The main drawback with this machine is the slow speed, but for the price that is to be expected. This printer is small and light, and can be used without connecting it to a PC, so it’s great for printing photographs away from home. We sell both remanufactured and HP original cartridges for this machine:

Laser Printers

Laser printers work by projecting an image onto a rotating drum cylinder. Instead of liquid ink, laser printers use a powder called toner, which is transferred onto the drum with static electricity. The toner powder is then pressed onto paper and heated so that it melts, and a printed page is produced. This is why the paper is warm when it exits a laser printer.

Laser printers excel at producing large volumes of crisp text. The cost to use laser printers per page can be significantly cheaper than inkjet printers, but their ability to produce quality photos and color pictures is very limited.

The most common laser printers are monochrome, meaning they only print in black and white. There are color laser printers, and recently prices on color laser printers have dropped significantly, so they can be a viable option for a small or home office. Color laser printers are still inferior compared to inkjet printers for printing photographs and pictures, but the new color laser printers are very effective at producing color prints of images like graphs and charts, which can be very useful in an office environment.
