We used three criteria in developing these recommendations. First, we considered only ink saving fonts which you can download for free. Next, we eliminated fonts that are not designed for body type. For example, we eliminated the following typefaces from consideration:
Finally, we weighed remaining candidates for each of the qualities recognized as industry standards for readability and overall appearance.
Our first choice of ink saving font for body type is Century Schoolbook, which the University of Wisconsin just picked for its publications because it uses less ink, and which the U.S. Supreme Court requires for readability. It is an excellent font and it is no wonder that it is the standard for such prestigious organizations.
To provide some choices we offer a second, even more efficient ink saving font - Baskerville Old Face. While it does not have the same popularity as Century Schoolbook, it uses significantly less ink and is still very readable.
